Prepare Your Self, Your Client, and Your Practice for Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy: A Step-by-Step Guide by Karen L. Smith MSS, LCSW
Interested in a quick but comprehensive professional KAP overview?
This 3 hour CEU virtual on-demand program will help you consider ketamine-assisted psychotherapy treatment for your clients and for your practice.
Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy: How Therapists are Using Ketamine to Transform Care provides a clear, accessible introduction to the clinical foundations of KAP, including when it’s appropriate, how it differs from traditional therapy, and what responsible implementation looks like. Whether you’re curious about integrating KAP into your practice or simply want to better support clients asking about psychedelic assisted psychotherapy, this training will equip you with the essential concepts and considerations.
Do you learn best by demonstration?
Lots of people do! My former colleague and I created a series of videos to demonstrate various elements of ketamine assisted psychotherapy. We found in our years of training psychotherapists to work in KAP that folx really value a chance to see what KAP actually looks like and how to do it. (note, these videos are included in the program fee for our 6 hour training module)
- Initial Intake (20 Minutes)
- Consent to Treatment (7 Minutes)
- Touch Refusal Exercise (5 Minutes)
- Medicine Journey Session (16 Minutes)
- Medicine Journey Session Part II (11 Minutes)
Ready to try the medicine yourself?
Much can be said about whether or not you “should” try the medicine to work with it as a tool in your clinical work. Certainly, it is strongly encouraged.
My strongest recommendation for clinicians who want to experience the medicine, is to do so in a group, with a practitioner they would like to learn from. There is no greater exposure to a version of how to prepare and facilitate KAP through to integration.
Becoming Your Own Ally: A medicine-supported group experience will allow you to see how I use the material from my book to facilitate change for clients. Besides your own medicine journey experience, you will also have a chance to learn from the KAP experiences of the 9 other participants, many whom are psychotherapists in KAP training.
We are also happy to work with you individually to explore use of the medicine as part of your preparation for working with KAP. With one of our therapists, and in collaboration with yours, we can facilitate multiple journey options for you.

Need your KAP client paperwork in order?
Essential Onboarding & Education Resources for Incorporating KAP into Your Practice
- From Author of Prepare Yourself, Your Clients and Yours Practice: A Step-by-Step Guide, Karen L. Smith MSS, LCSW
- Digital package, with documents in both PDF and Word formats for sharing and customization.
- Ready-to-use support documents to help you onboard KAP clients ethically, safely, and with ease
Client evaluation for candidacy can begin prior to the first meeting. As can client psychoeducation about KAP. Providing clients with supplemental psychoeducation at various junctures in the onboarding process significantly beefs up and simultaneously shortens client preparation. (note, this package is included in the program fee for the 6-hour training module)
Interested in a supervised KAP practicum/ experience?
It is so uncomfortable trying something for the first couple times, but as psychotherapists we already know that is how we ultimately will learn.
For therapists who have already done some preliminary education in KAP*, we can offer supervised opportunities to work with one of your clients or one of ours.
We also have group practicums opportunities several times a year to join us in facilitating our signature group offering Becoming Your Own Ally: A medicine-supported group experience.
Finding and Making Paths in KAP: Supervision/Consultation Group
Whether you are in the first months of working with ketamine assisted psychotherapy as a tool in your psychotherapy practice, or have been providing KAP for years, our group in an opportunity for seasoned clinicians to explore how they use this tool in their practice..
This is for clinicians who have already taken some basic education and training in KAP* and have started to work with KAP clients in their practice. KAP might be new, but you are not a new therapist…just new to this particular tool.
This is the group where we think about protocol approaches as relates to how often our clients do medicine journeys, if they do them live and monitored with us, at home protocols, psychedelic versus psycholytic uses of the medicine, whether they are on journeys to collect data or take in somatic truths, and on and on. Like, the therapy part.
